Balance

This weekend I was speaking to a good friend. He is phenomenal at what he does, is well respected, & has seen a fast track career trajectory.

He shared how he is experiencing a growing sense of stress that’s clogging his mind, & impacting his ability to get things done.

As we exchanged perspectives, we unearthed that much of what he was experiencing had its root in accountability. He felt accountable to continue delivering stellar results in his role. Accountable to do justice to his role as a parent. Accountable to secure his family's financial future. While this feeling was always there, it had amplified in the last 18 months.

Taking accountability is a good trait, but it needs to be moderated. Extreme accountability isn’t sustainable. Instead of being a strength it can overwhelm us, clog our thinking & impair our ability to take action.

Balanced accountability is key. It involves focusing on each moment to do what’s needed, while realizing how insignificant we & our problems are in the scheme of things. For the latter, imagine this - we are 1 of 7 billion people on earth, earth is 1 of 9 planets in our solar system, our solar system is one of the 3,000 solar systems in the milky way, the milky way is one of the 2 trillion galaxies out there in the universe.
