Fear of Irrelevance

In the work place, sometimes, we come across behaviors that are suboptimal or sabotaging progress. The amazing part is that it is often unintentional or even seemingly subconscious, as the brightest minds realize and even recognize the importance of what needs to get done from a bigger picture standpoint.

These behaviors can range from a team not collaborating with another, or different departments putting pressure on each other to achieve x or y without recognizing the role of external market environment. Other examples can include some leaders focusing solely on their initiatives, unwilling to contribute to other's priorities, not recognizing that it's a give and take that takes them forward and a unidimensional view only stalls relationships (& therefore slows progress).

As I reflect on this, I believe it's not the lack of ‘WHY’ or big picture that drives this, but rather the fear of irrelevance that fuels these suboptimal behaviors.

The fear of irrelevance is a state of mind. As we lead a team or a org., our actions can either alleviate this or amplify this state in our teams.

Alleviating this fear of irrelevance is about three things
1. Ensure people know what their role is in the organization/ team so they are focused on it; ambiguity in role amplifies fear of irrelevance
2. Measure senior leaders not just their own progress but also how they support other’s (peers) in the organization in achieving the org. priorities
3. In 1:1s, reinforce your trust and confidence in their capability, especially when the going gets tough
