Bring Me the Problem OR Solutions
For decades there has been a well meaning debate on which approach works better in grooming our people and ensuring they freely share their concerns.
A. Don’t come to me with a problem alone, but come to me with a solution
B. Come to me with a problem, it’s my role to help you find the answers
I have tried both these approaches over the years with different levels of success.
I find Option A works best when dealing with experienced team members, where the scope of the problem is typically within their job responsibilities. Option B works well when coaching people new to their role, and/ or if the problem statement is beyond their current role (requiring a big picture view). Of course, other dynamics such as personalities we are dealing with, their experience levels, etc. play a crucial role as well.
However, if I had to choose one option, I default to B as the broader organizational message, as it enables more people to open up and freely share information, than worry about if they have a solution.
What’s your default option and why?
