Get Your Eye In
Was having a chat with a senior leader, from one of the new age technology companies, and he said something very pertinent. "Get your eye in, before you try to be innovative or audacious"
Far too often, when we take up a new role or join a new company we wonder why our brilliant ideas aren't being accepted, or encouraged.
What you did in your last role or last company has little relevance as we start afresh! It's like taking a fresh guard after the drinks break or scoring a century in cricket. You need to again get your eye in by getting used to the pace and bounce of the wicket (i.e. understanding the role & company dynamics), and spending sometime taking a few singles (i.e. having some small wins to build credibility), before you play audacious or innovative shots (or make recommendations)!
Performance = Credibility = Greater Freedom for Innovation & Ideas (+ Seat at the Table)
Timing is everything - we need to time our ideas, once we have demonstrated dexterity in performance and built our credibility.
