Lego of our careers
Our career is like a large lego set. It looks beautiful when it's all done, but we cannot build it instantly and seldom do we always know how it would shape up.
To build it effectively, we need to focus on a small part of the lego set, do it well, then move the next piece we plan to build. When we complete building a piece we get an inspiration of what next to build. For someone that inspiration may be to go ahead with the blueprint they had once imagined, while for others (and maybe the majority) our inspiration keeps evolving the more we build. If we build a beautiful oasis, we get inspired to add the windmill or add more people to the lego scene, though originally we may have imagined something else.
Much like this, in our careers we need to focus on building a skill set and gather an experience at a time. Once we do that well, we can then get inspired to continue with the broad blueprint when we started out with or pivot to a different and equally beautiful new next step in our careers.
Many times we get daunted thinking about the complete blueprint. Instead thinking about and working towards small part of the career offers greater clarity and progress. Equally, it's good to keep a flexible mindset and see what you want to make, and not necessarily be wedded with what you had imagined at one point of time.
The fun of the lego is in building it, and admiration of its beauty is a short lived activity. Soon after the admiration, we need to start working on the next piece of the lego.
May your lego be beautiful!
