Sharing the Spoils
Compensation, promotion and other ways of sharing the spoils like stake in the business/ profits or a seat at the table is more about recognition than it is about financial returns alone for people. It's a way of telling people their contribution matters.
It's not always about offering the most money or the best title in the industry. It is, however, about offering the best you can within your firm, and being competitive financially to retain & attract talent. Compensation is a very important component of what matters, but not necessarily the only thing that matters. Culture, responsibility, and recognition are equally if not more important, once the compensation is competitive.
