Peer Litmus Test
Peer litmus test!
How we come across to our peers is a good litmus test for measuring our readiness for the next level. The more open minded, collaborative (or not), and fair we are, the greater our readiness and chances for a promotion. For it takes content, humility and willingness to look at the bigger organizational picture vs. your own goals, to be respected by peers.
When evaluating people, especially senior talent, for step-up roles, a key element that a lot of leaders use is evaluating whether the person will take his peers along or bulldoze their way through when promoted. Often, the balance tilts in favor of those that can influence the peer set, yet remain open and accessible.
The candidates ready for the next level often are recognized by their peers, before their managers, as playing a role that's worthy of their next level.
