Relationships

At work and in life we all have relationships that are mutually beneficial and reinforcing. There is something you get from the person and he/ she in return offers something you value, even if intangible. This can be true of a mentor-mentee relationship, colleagues, boss and subordinate, two friends, investors, etc. These are healthy relationships, built on the principle of 'give and take'. Of course what you give vs. what you take from the relationship ebbs and flows, but still maintains some kind of a balance. When the balance is completely lopsided, the relationship seldom sustains.

Sometimes we end up confusing a symbiotic relationship as one that should offer unconditional support i.e. have your back in all situations. However, it doesn't always play out like that. And when it doesn't happen like that we are quick to blame the other person, we feel let down and even hurt.

Sometimes I wonder, if it is wise to review your relationships to understand which are symbiotic and which ones are unconditional. There is nothing wrong with either of them, but often in our categorization of them. Just knowing the distinction is powerful and shapes your perspective.
